Helsinki Airport Extension 2020/New bus gates 2016
Vantaa, Finland
Gross area: 3,160 m2
The new bus gate area at Helsinki Airport is part of the terminal expansion programme that will increase transit capacity at the airport. During the construction phase, when fewer contact stands are available for planes, passengers are transported from the building by bus to remote stands on the apron.
The building has six bus gates with space for a total of twelve buses.
Despite the temporary nature of the building, we sought to create a comfortable and user-friendly atmosphere for the bus gate area.
The interior design is themed around the natural elements of the Finnish archipelago, as reflected in the landscape images lining the walls and the free-form seating islands.
The bus gate area is connected to the second floor of the existing non-Schengen terminal via a bridge over the traffic area. The building has a steel frame, with a roof constructed of wood elements. The façades are clad with massive aluminium sheets.
