LAHTI SPORTS CENTER MASTER PLAN
AND THE GRAND STAND BUILDING

Lahti, Finland 1977

International competitions have been held in the Lahti Skiing Centre since 1923 and the World Skiing Championships both in 1938 and in 1958. For the 1978 World Skiing Championships the old traditional Skiing Centre was entirely renewed. The planning assignment comprised the master plan for the Sports Centre with skiing track and spectator area plans, including also the summer use of the Sports Centre.

In addition to hillside spectator stands a new grandstand was designed with seats for 5350 spectators. The grandstand seats are partly covered by placing above them the facilities for commentators, press and officials. By this arrangement a wide view towards skiing tracks has been obtained. This cantilevered topmost level is supported on concrete columns with pre stressed steel tension bars. All load bearing concrete and steel structures are "cold" structures.
