PES-Architects talks about green building practices at Baku COP29
PES-Architects was invited to talk about and join panel discussions on the use of sustainable bamboo building materials at the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024. .
In his keynote speech, PES-Architects’ partner Martin Lukasczyk presented the ways in which various forms of bamboo have been used in our China projects from the Wuxi Grand Theatre to Fuzhou Strait Culture and Art Centre and, most recently, the Nanchang Grand Theatre.
Martin also discussed the use of wood and CLT in the future Turku Music Hall Fuuga, drawing a comparison between the use of spruce in Finland and bamboo in China. Traditionally regarded as “poor man’s materials”, these resources have been elevated through design, showcasing their functional versatility and aesthetic potential in our performance space projects.
The building sector is responsible for one third of global CO2 emissions. Replacing concrete, steel, and brick structures with timber structures and upscaling bamboo plantations to enable the innovative application of bamboo in construction can contribute to fighting global warming.
