DESIGN CONCEPT:
The South Pier is an extension of the non-Schengen area of Terminal 2 and caters particularly to the growing number of Asian travellers, providing increased capacity and gates for wide-body aircraft. The architecture features open spaces filled with natural light, as well as elements of Finnish nature and design in the materials and furnishing. PES-Architects was responsible for both architectural and interior design, including fixed furniture.
As passengers may need to spend a long time at the airport, the aim was to design comfortable spaces with places to relax and unwind. The use of birch wood brings warmth and a cosy feel to the large public spaces. Special furniture was designed to cater to travellers’ needs, including lounge chairs and wooden electronics charging stations.
A new pre-boarding lounge concept was created for the South Pier. The lounges are furnished with Finnish design classics.
